Pre-Christian Celtic and Germanic people of old Europe said that their sacred burial grounds were populated by mystical dark-skinned elves whom they called “Brownies.” These beings are also known throughout West Africa even today. In Northern Ghana they are called Mmoatia.
These dwarfs are actually miniature chocolate people. This is where the concept of the chocolate fudge brownie comes from. Whenever you sit down to eat a freshly baked brownie—which is a miniature chocolate cake—you are figuratively eating these bite-sized magical beings of ancient African and European lore as a form of Eucharist.
The preconscious desire to consume melanin is apparently embedded in the genetic memory of the Germans to this day. German chocolate manufacturer, Bahlsen, produces a thin wafer cookie covered in rich dark chocolate called “Afrika.” While, I’m not German, I think it tastes pretty good.
In this two-part series I will explore some topics that appear to have nothing to do with one another, but are in fact, very much related. Together, we will examine the legacy of Saint Maurice in relation to the sacred mysteries of chocolate and Holy Grail lore.
Through this editorial journey through time and space we are about to embark on, critical elements of the past, present, and future will come into richer focus to yield applicable insights for us all.
