Many of us have come across considerable documentation pointing to the reality that the game of chess has African origins and was introduced to Europe by the Moors of medieval Europe.

In its design, the black and white chessboard is reminiscent of the Moroccan flag that flew during the Almohade Dynasty and resembles the black and white pattern seen in Senegalese fabrics.

Every individual piece on the chessboard has its own distinct movement. What I’ve come to understand is that these 32 pieces are conceptual placeholders for powerful spirits with specific functions in nature. These distinct functions were indicated by the way in which each of the 32 chess pieces moved across the board.
